Brian Blackney: Lonesome Rose Pottery
Brian Blakney (1950-2022) was born in Moncton. In the early 70's he attended the New Brunswick Craft School in Fredericton, majoring in pottery. Upon completion, he created Lonesome Rose Pottery, first in Fredericton, then moving to his grandparent's cottage in West River, near Fundy National Park, NB. Summers found him teaching Raku at the Fundy Park Craft School, winters selling at various Christmas Markets. His work was mainly in stoneware, later including porcelain. Raku became a favorite method of creation, and he enjoyed providing evening demonstrations of this incredibly dramatic process.
Brian was a very talented artist and took great pride in his pottery. He was well known for his Lonesome Rose Pottery Studio and became a very important part of the community, sharing his talents and artwork with everyone who took an interest. In later years he worked at a studio in Victoria, BC and instructed classes. He was an excellent teacher, and found this aspect of his profession very rewarding. Teaching his students was one of his greatest joys and accomplishments.
